I have been working in the field since hand-coding HTML was the only option for making websites. A time when "browser/platform compatibility" was the worshiped keyword, visual layout was winning out over structural markup, and a mastery of tricking browsers with awkward HTML workarounds seemed to be both a necessity and the ultimate proof of a coder’s craftsmanship.

Now, a few "must-read" web design standards books later, after changing my web design gurus, and after switching my personal keywords to "accessibility", "usability" and "semantic markup", I have learned to rest in the CSS Zen Garden, and I develop my sites with renewed enthusiasm for communication by design.
